IINA is a modern, open‑source video and audio player built for macOS. It leverages the mpv engine and offers a rich UI with features like picture‑in‑picture, Touch Bar support, and extensive subtitle handling.
Use cases
- play local video files with subtitles on macOS
- stream online video and audio sources directly in the player
- use picture‑in‑picture mode while working on other apps
- manage and play music files in a dedicated music mode
- customize playback controls with keyboard, mouse, and Touch Bar shortcuts
When to choose
- You need a native macOS media player with a modern UI and deep macOS integration.
- You want mpv’s decoding capabilities combined with a user‑friendly interface.
- Advanced features like Touch Bar, picture‑in‑picture, and extensive subtitle support are important.
When to avoid
- You require a cross‑platform player that runs on Windows or Linux.
- You prefer a lightweight CLI‑only media player without a GUI.
- You need a player with built‑in DRM support for protected content.
