Unpackerr is a Go daemon that watches completed downloads from Starr apps (Radarr, Sonarr, Lidarr, Readarr, Whisparr) or a watch folder and automatically extracts archives so they can be imported, then cleans up extracted files. It supports recursive extraction of rar, zip, 7z, tar, gzip, and ISO archives, including encrypted ones, and ships with a companion one-shot CLI extractor called xt.

Use cases

  • automatically extract rar files stuck in Radarr activity queue
  • watch a download folder and extract new archives
  • extract completed torrent downloads for Sonarr import
  • delete extracted files after media server import
  • recursively extract archives within archives
  • one-shot command line archive extraction
  • monitor extraction events with Prometheus and Grafana

When to choose

  • you use Starr apps and downloads fail to import because they are in rar archives
  • you want a small single-binary daemon that extracts and cleans up automatically
  • you need recursive extraction of many archive formats including encrypted rars and 7zips
  • you want webhooks, scripts, and metrics triggered by extraction events

When to avoid

  • you only need to extract a single path once and prefer no daemon (use xt instead)
  • you need a GUI-based archive extractor
  • your downloads never arrive as archives
