Rectangle is a free, open‑source macOS application that lets you move and resize windows using keyboard shortcuts and draggable snap areas. It supports macOS 10.15+ on both Intel and Apple Silicon.
Use cases
- quickly snap a window to the left or right half of the screen with a shortcut
- resize windows to quarters or thirds by dragging them to screen edges
- use keyboard shortcuts to tile multiple windows in rows or columns
- move windows without using the mouse by assigning custom shortcuts
- organise windows on a multi‑monitor setup with snap‑area gestures
When to choose
- You need a lightweight, native macOS window manager with extensive keyboard shortcuts.
- You prefer an open‑source solution that integrates with macOS system preferences.
- You want customizable snap areas and optional animation for window positioning.
When to avoid
- You are looking for a cross‑platform window manager that works on Windows or Linux.
- You require advanced tiling features like dynamic workspaces or scripting.
- You need a solution that runs as a background service without a GUI.
