mpv-android is a video player application for Android built on top of libmpv. It offers hardware/software decoding, gesture controls, styled subtitle rendering via libass, network stream playback, and background/Picture-in-Picture support.
Use cases
- play videos on android with mpv
- watch videos with styled subtitles on android
- play network streams on my phone
- background audio playback for video files
- video player for android tv
- dual subtitle track playback
- high quality video rendering with advanced scaler settings
When to choose
- you want the mpv playback engine on an Android device
- you need advanced rendering options like debanding, interpolation, and custom scalers
- you need libass styled subtitles or dual subtitle tracks
- you want an open-source player available on F-Droid or Google Play
When to avoid
- you want an embeddable AAR library for your own app - mpv-android explicitly is not a library
- you need DRM-protected streaming service playback
- you need an iOS or desktop player
