Aleph is a self-hosted platform for indexing, searching, and browsing large volumes of documents (PDF, Word, HTML) and structured data (CSV, XLS, SQL), with entity cross-referencing against watchlists. It is built primarily for investigative journalists and OSINT researchers, though the open-source version is being sunset in favor of Aleph Pro.
Use cases
- search and browse large document leaks
- find mentions of people and companies across datasets
- cross-reference entities against sanctions and watchlists
- index PDFs and spreadsheets for investigative research
- build a searchable archive of OSINT documents
- investigate offshore leaks and corporate networks
When to choose
- you need to search and cross-reference large document dumps and structured data
- you are an investigative journalist or OSINT researcher tracking people and companies
- you want a self-hosted entity-focused search platform
When to avoid
- you need long-term support or new features - the open-source version ends maintenance after December 2025
- you want a lightweight document search without entity extraction
- you prefer a fully managed SaaS without self-hosting
