## What it is
Zenodo is a CERN-built open-source research data repository platform where researchers can share and preserve research outputs of any size or format, issuing DOIs and supporting communities. It is implemented as a layer on top of the Invenio digital library framework using Python, Flask, Elasticsearch, and PostgreSQL.

## Use cases
- host an institutional research data repository
- self-host a Zenodo-like repository for research outputs
- assign DOIs to datasets and software releases
- build a digital library or document repository
- manage open-access publications and datasets
- run a repository for EU-funded research outputs
- integrate GitHub releases with a data repository

## When to choose
- you need a full-featured, DOI-minting research data repository
- you want to build on the mature Invenio ecosystem
- you need community curation, versioning, and OAI-PMH support
- you require a proven platform backed by CERN and OpenAIRE

## When to avoid
- you only need simple file hosting without DOI or metadata workflows
- you cannot operate a complex stack (Elasticsearch, PostgreSQL, Redis, RabbitMQ)
- you want a lightweight static site or minimal archive
- you need a turnkey SaaS rather than self-hosted infrastructure

## Facets
- artifact type: application
- maturity: active
- function: search-engine, web-framework, api-framework, file-upload, documentation
- domain: self-hosted, education, data-science, web-development, apis, documentation
