## What it is
Zellij is a terminal workspace (terminal multiplexer) written in Rust that provides panes, tabs, sessions, layouts, and floating/stacked panes with a great out-of-the-box experience. It supports deep customization, WebAssembly-based plugins in any language, session resurrection, multiplayer collaboration, and a built-in web client.

## Use cases
- manage multiple terminal sessions and panes in one interface
- keep long-running commands alive after disconnecting from ssh
- automate my dev environment setup with predefined layouts
- find a beginner-friendly tmux alternative with on-screen shortcuts
- extend my terminal with custom plugins
- share a terminal session for pair programming
- organize work by project with named sessions and tabs

## When to choose
- you want a terminal multiplexer that works well out of the box with discoverable shortcuts
- you need layouts, session resurrection, or floating/stacked panes
- you want to write plugins in any language compiling to WebAssembly
- you're new to multiplexers and find tmux's learning curve steep

## When to avoid
- you rely on an existing tmux configuration or ecosystem scripts
- you need a minimal, lightweight multiplexer with a tiny binary
- you depend on tooling that specifically integrates with tmux or screen
