## What it is
VNote is a free, open-source, Qt-based note-taking application focused on Markdown, combining a powerful editor with notebook/folder/tag-based notes management. Notes are stored as plain text files on local disk with no proprietary database, and it runs natively on Linux, Windows, and macOS.

## Use cases
- take markdown notes with vim keybindings
- organize notes in local plain-text files
- write markdown with live preview and math rendering
- manage notebooks of notes with tags and folders
- render diagrams like mermaid and plantuml in notes
- sync notes via git or my own service
- fuzzy search across all my notes

## When to choose
- you want full ownership of notes as plain Markdown files on disk with no lock-in
- you are a power user who wants Vi mode, shortcuts, tabs, splits, and deep customization
- you need math (MathJax) and diagrams (PlantUML, Graphviz, Mermaid) in your notes
- you want a native cross-platform desktop app on Linux, Windows, or macOS

## When to avoid
- you need cloud-native or mobile-first note syncing out of the box
- you want a collaborative or web-based note editor
- you need rich WYSIWYG editing rather than Markdown-centric writing
- you are on Windows 7/8, where the legacy build has reduced features
