## What it is
The GitHub Extension for Visual Studio is a VSIX plugin that adds GitHub integration to Visual Studio 2015 and newer, living mostly in the Team Explorer pane. It lets developers authenticate with GitHub.com or GitHub Enterprise, clone and create repositories, push commits, and work with pull requests, issues, and gists without leaving the IDE.

## Use cases
- integrate GitHub into Visual Studio
- clone and push GitHub repositories from inside the IDE
- manage and review pull requests without leaving Visual Studio
- create a new GitHub repository from Team Explorer
- connect Team Explorer to a GitHub Enterprise account
- view and create gists and issues while coding

## When to choose
- You are on Visual Studio 2015 through 2019, which lack built-in GitHub support
- You want GitHub repository, pull request, and issue workflows embedded in the Team Explorer pane
- You connect to GitHub Enterprise Server from Visual Studio
- You prefer the classic Team Explorer experience over the newer Git tooling

## When to avoid
- You use Visual Studio 2022 or newer, where GitHub and Git support are already built in
- You work in VS Code, Rider, or another editor instead of Visual Studio
- You need actively developed features or new GitHub API capabilities, since the extension's last release was mid-2023 and development has effectively stopped
- You rely on GitHub Copilot or modern GitHub features inside the IDE
