## What it is
Uptrace is an open-source Application Performance Monitoring (APM) platform that collects and visualizes OpenTelemetry traces, metrics, and logs. It stores telemetry in ClickHouse (with PostgreSQL for metadata), provides dashboards, alerting, and a SQL-like query language, and can be self-hosted or used as a cloud service.

## Use cases
- monitor distributed tracing across microservices
- self-host an OpenTelemetry backend for traces, metrics, and logs
- set up alerting and notifications for application errors and metrics
- replace Datadog or New Relic with a cheaper open-source APM
- visualize application performance with pre-built dashboards
- query spans and metrics with a PromQL-like language
- integrate Grafana with a Tempo/Prometheus-compatible datasource

## When to choose
- you want a self-hosted, OpenTelemetry-native observability stack at lower cost than SaaS APMs
- you need unified traces, metrics, and logs in a single UI
- you already use ClickHouse and want efficient storage of large telemetry volumes
- you need Grafana compatibility and Prometheus-style metric queries

## When to avoid
- you need a fully managed solution and don't want to operate ClickHouse, PostgreSQL, and Redis
- you require a permissive license for embedding or reselling (it is AGPL-3.0)
- your team is already standardized on another observability platform with deep ecosystem integrations
