## What it is
Upspin is an experimental framework of protocols and reference implementations providing a secure, global naming system for sharing files and data across devices and services. It combines end-to-end encryption with tools like a FUSE filesystem (upspinfs), CLI, cacheserver, and self-hosted servers.

## Use cases
- securely share files with specific people without making them public
- access the same files across all my devices under one global namespace
- mount encrypted cloud storage as a local filesystem with FUSE
- self-host my own storage with end-to-end encryption
- keep nightly snapshots of my data
- manage all my data across commercial web services securely

## When to choose
- you want strong end-to-end encryption with a Plan 9-style global namespace
- you are comfortable self-hosting servers and running a Go toolchain
- you want to study the design of secure federated naming and sharing systems

## When to avoid
- you need actively maintained software - central infrastructure (keyserver) was shut down in 2025
- you need high performance - it is explicitly not a performance-focused project
- you need something suitable for non-technical users
- you want plug-and-play cloud storage without server administration
