## What it is
Sylve is an open-source web-based management platform for FreeBSD that unifies Bhyve virtual machines, FreeBSD Jails, ZFS storage, networking, firewalling, backups, and multi-node clustering into a single control plane. It is written in Go with a SvelteKit frontend, exposes a REST API and web UI, and installs via pkg on FreeBSD 15+.

## Use cases
- manage bhyve virtual machines on freebsd through a web interface
- create and administer freebsd jails without shell scripts
- manage zfs pools, snapshots, and replication from a gui
- configure pf firewall, nat, and wireguard on a freebsd host
- cluster multiple freebsd hosts and migrate vms between them
- serve zfs datasets over samba or iscsi
- self-hosted alternative to proxmox for freebsd

## When to choose
- you run FreeBSD 15+ servers and want one interface for VMs, jails, ZFS, and networking
- you want a FreeBSD-native alternative to Proxmox or manual shell-script administration
- you need multi-host clustering with guest migration and replicated backups on FreeBSD
- you prefer managing firewall, DHCP, and WireGuard alongside workloads in one tool

## When to avoid
- your infrastructure runs on Linux rather than FreeBSD
- you need to manage only a single non-ZFS host without virtualization features
- you require a very long track record of production hardening, as the project is young and evolving
- you need support for hypervisors other than Bhyve or container runtimes other than Jails
