## What it is
Shifu is a Kubernetes-native, protocol- and vendor-agnostic IoT gateway that represents physical devices as CRDs and device microservices (DeviceShifu) within a cluster. It abstracts device capabilities as APIs so applications can connect, monitor, and control heterogeneous IoT devices without hardware-specific code.

## Use cases
- connect and control IoT devices from Kubernetes
- manage industrial devices over MQTT and OPC UA
- build a digital twin of physical devices
- integrate heterogeneous IoT protocols into a cloud-native platform
- run an IoT gateway on edge clusters or Raspberry Pi
- abstract device APIs so apps are decoupled from hardware

## When to choose
- you already run Kubernetes and want devices managed as cluster resources
- you need to support many protocols and vendors without lock-in
- you want device capabilities exposed as simple HTTP APIs
- you deploy IoT workloads across edge and cloud

## When to avoid
- you need a lightweight gateway without a Kubernetes cluster
- your devices use protocols Shifu does not yet support and you cannot write a driver
- you want a turnkey commercial IoT platform with dashboards out of the box
