## What it is
Searx is a privacy-respecting, hackable metasearch engine that aggregates results from multiple third-party search engines without tracking users. It is self-hostable under the AGPL-3.0 license, but the project is officially no longer maintained as its author has moved on to a new tool called Hister.

## Use cases
- run a private search engine that doesn't track me
- self-host a metasearch engine for my family or team
- aggregate results from Google, Bing, and DuckDuckGo without being profiled
- add a privacy-respecting search endpoint to my browser
- host a search instance that doesn't log user queries
- customize and hack on an open-source search engine

## When to choose
- you need a self-hosted metasearch proxy that strips identifying data before querying upstream engines
- you want to run a private search instance for personal or group use
- you want a hackable Python codebase to customize search behavior

## When to avoid
- starting a new deployment today, since the project is explicitly unmaintained - consider searxng or the author's successor Hister instead
- you need guaranteed upstream fixes for broken engine scrapers
- you need a fully local search index that doesn't depend on third-party engines
- you require commercial support or long-term security maintenance
