## What it is
Project NOMAD is a self-hosted, offline-first knowledge and education server that packages Wikipedia, books, courses, offline maps, and optional local AI (via Ollama) into a Docker-orchestrated stack with a browser-based Command Center UI. It installs on Debian-based x86 Linux, downloads content while online, and keeps working with no internet connection.

## Use cases
- run an offline wikipedia and knowledge server at home
- set up emergency preparedness server with medical and survival references
- host khan academy courses offline for education
- run a private local AI chatbot on my own hardware
- serve offline street-level maps without internet
- build an off-grid information server on an old PC

## When to choose
- you need knowledge resources available with no internet, such as for emergencies, off-grid living, or travel
- you want a private, fully local AI assistant with no cloud dependency
- you have x86 hardware running Debian/Ubuntu and want a one-script install of a whole content stack

## When to avoid
- you need ARM or Raspberry Pi support, which is not supported
- you run macOS or unsupported virtualization platforms
- you need built-in authentication or multi-user access control out of the box
- you only want a single lightweight tool rather than a full Docker-based server stack
