## What it is
Network UPS Tools (NUT) is an open-source toolkit for monitoring and managing power devices such as UPS units, PDUs, ATS switches, PSUs, and solar controllers across hundreds of vendors via a unified protocol (published as RFC 9271). It uses a layered client-server architecture with drivers, a server, and network clients, running on most Unix-like systems and partially on Windows.

## Use cases
- monitor ups battery status on linux server
- shut down servers automatically when power fails
- manage pdu and ats devices from one interface
- monitor ups over snmp or usb
- centralized ups monitoring across network
- graceful shutdown of nas during power outage
- track power events and ups health

## When to choose
- you need vendor-neutral monitoring of UPS/PDU hardware across many manufacturers
- you want automated shutdown of multiple networked hosts on power loss
- you need a long-standing, widely packaged solution with broad hardware compatibility

## When to avoid
- you only need a vendor's own Windows GUI tool for a single desktop UPS
- your device is not in NUT's hardware compatibility list and no generic driver fits
- you need a pure cloud/SaaS monitoring solution without local daemons
