## What it is
Lokinet is the reference implementation of LLARP, a low-latency layer 3 onion routing protocol that forms a decentralized, IP-based overlay network. It routes traffic through staked Oxen service nodes to hide users' IPs and enable anonymous, censorship-resistant internet access with any application.

## Use cases
- browse the internet anonymously without exposing my IP
- access censorship-resistant websites and services
- route any application's traffic through an onion network without special support
- host websites that can't be censored or taken down
- make anonymous voice calls over an onion-routed network
- run a decentralized alternative to Tor or VPNs

## When to choose
- you want Tor-like anonymity but with IP-layer routing that works with any application without patching
- you need a decentralized, Sybil-resistant network without central directory authorities
- you want to host or access .loki hidden services
- you need censorship-resistant access and exit-node support

## When to avoid
- you need WebRTC or BitTorrent inside the overlay (protocols embedding bare IPs)
- you need the mature ecosystem and large relay count of Tor
- you require a lightweight proxy rather than a full network-layer client
- you need official support on platforms still in development like iOS
