## What it is
LibreNMS is a fully featured, community-driven GPL-licensed network monitoring system written in PHP with MySQL and SNMP. It auto-discovers network devices, collects metrics via SNMP pollers, and provides graphs, alerting, and a full API through a mobile-friendly web UI.

## Use cases
- monitor bandwidth and health of routers, switches, and servers
- automatically discover all devices on my network via LLDP, CDP, and SNMP
- set up email or Slack alerts when a device goes down
- graph interface traffic and generate bandwidth billing reports
- scale monitoring across a large network with distributed polling
- self-host an open-source alternative to commercial NMS tools

## When to choose
- you need auto-discovering SNMP monitoring for heterogeneous network hardware
- you want a self-hosted, GPL-licensed monitoring system with alerting and API access
- you need horizontal scaling via distributed pollers
- you want broad device support including Cisco, Juniper, HP, Linux, and FreeBSD

## When to avoid
- you need application-level or APM-style monitoring rather than network/device monitoring
- you cannot run a PHP/MySQL stack or prefer agentless SaaS monitoring
- you need MIB-based dynamic sensor discovery rather than YAML/PHP definitions
- you want a lightweight single-binary monitoring agent
