## What it is
KubeEdge is a CNCF-graduated open-source framework built on Kubernetes that extends containerized application orchestration and device management to edge hosts. It consists of cloud and edge components providing networking, application deployment, metadata synchronization, and MQTT-based device access between cloud and edge.

## Use cases
- manage edge devices and applications from a Kubernetes cluster
- run containerized workloads on resource-constrained edge nodes
- keep edge applications running autonomously when the cloud connection is offline
- connect IoT devices to edge nodes over MQTT
- process data locally at the edge to reduce latency and bandwidth costs
- deploy machine learning and image recognition apps to edge locations
- synchronize metadata and status between cloud and edge over unstable networks

## When to choose
- you need Kubernetes-native orchestration extended to edge or remote sites
- you manage fleets of edge nodes with intermittent cloud connectivity
- you need CRD-based IoT device management with MQTT support
- you want a lightweight agent for resource-constrained edge hardware
- you want a mature, CNCF-graduated project with active releases

## When to avoid
- you only need a plain cloud Kubernetes cluster with no edge nodes
- your edge devices cannot run containers or a Kubernetes-compatible agent
- you need a fully managed edge platform rather than self-operated infrastructure
- your workloads are tiny single-board deployments where even a lightweight agent is too heavy
