## What it is
Jitsi Desktop is a free open-source audio/video calling and instant messaging client written in Java, supporting SIP, XMPP/Jabber, IRC, and legacy networks with encrypted calls (ZRTP/SRTP) and OTR chat. It is the legacy desktop project behind Jitsi Meet and is no longer actively developed, relying on community contributions.

## Use cases
- make encrypted SIP and XMPP audio/video calls from my desktop
- chat client that connects to multiple IM networks like IRC, ICQ, and Jabber
- desktop VoIP app with ZRTP encrypted calls
- OTR encrypted instant messaging client
- share my desktop during a SIP or XMPP call
- multi-protocol communicator for Windows, Mac, and Linux

## When to choose
- you need a multi-protocol desktop client for SIP, XMPP, and legacy IM networks
- you want end-to-end encrypted calls (ZRTP/SRTP) and OTR chat in one app
- you need components like Jigasi's SIP integration or want to study an OSGi-based Java communicator

## When to avoid
- you want modern video conferencing - use Jitsi Meet instead
- you need actively maintained software with regular updates and support
- you need an RPM package or mobile (Android/iOS) client
