## What it is
HoloISO is an unofficial, installable rebuild of Valve's SteamOS 3 (Holo), packaged as an archiso configuration that produces a bootable installer ISO for generic x86 PCs. It re-implements Steam Deck-specific components (Deck UI, gamescope, OOBE, Valve packages) to deliver a close-to-official SteamOS experience outside the Steam Deck.

## Use cases
- install SteamOS on a regular PC or mini PC
- turn a handheld gaming PC into a Steam Deck-like console
- get the Steam Deck UI and Big Picture experience on desktop hardware
- boot a ready-made gaming-focused Arch-based Linux ISO
- run Steam games with Deck features like FSR and shader pre-caching on a TV/console setup
- build a living-room gaming console OS from an ISO

## When to choose
- You have an AMD GPU with RADV support and want the authentic Steam Deck experience on generic hardware
- You want a dedicated, console-like gaming OS for a handheld or HTPC rather than a general-purpose desktop
- You need Deck-specific features such as TDP/clock control, fan curves, firmware updaters, and the Vapor-themed Plasma session
- You are comfortable with Arch Linux tooling (pacman, archiso) and self-maintaining the install

## When to avoid
- You have an NVIDIA GPU - gamepadui is broken on it and no support is provided
- You rely on very new hardware (e.g., 7xxx-series CPUs) or Intel GPUs, where the experience is untested or unreliable
- You need official Valve support, guarantees, or a maintained release - this repo is explicitly EOL and work has moved to holoiso-staging/releases
- You want a general-purpose desktop Linux distro rather than a gaming-focused OS
