## What it is
Gluetun is a lightweight VPN client packaged as a thin Alpine Docker container, written in Go, supporting many VPN providers via OpenVPN or Wireguard. It also provides DNS over TLS, built-in shadowsocks and HTTP proxies, and a firewall kill switch for routing other containers' traffic through the VPN.

## Use cases
- route other docker containers' traffic through a vpn tunnel
- run a vpn sidecar container for torrenting clients
- encrypt dns with dns over tls inside a container
- expose an http or shadowsocks proxy through my vpn provider
- prevent ip leaks with a firewall kill switch when the vpn drops
- connect to mullvad, nordvpn, pia, surfshark or windscribe from a container

## When to choose
- you self-host apps in Docker and want their traffic to go through a VPN
- you need a small, configurable VPN client supporting many providers
- you want built-in DNS over TLS, proxies, and a kill switch in one container

## When to avoid
- you need a desktop VPN app with a graphical interface
- you are not using Docker or Linux-based container environments
- your VPN provider is not among the supported ones and you cannot use custom Wireguard/OpenVPN configs
