## What it is
Git Awards (formerly GitHub Awards) is a web application that ranks GitHub users by programming language and by location (city, country, worldwide) based on the star counts of their repositories. It crawls GitHub's list APIs, enriches data via Google BigQuery on the GitHub Archive dataset, and geocodes user locations to compute rankings.

## Use cases
- find my github ranking by language
- see who are the top javascript developers in my city
- rank github users by stars worldwide
- look up developer leaderboard for a country
- compare my github profile against other developers
- discover top contributors per programming language

## When to choose
- you want a public leaderboard of GitHub developers by language and geography
- you want to self-host a ranking service built on GitHub Archive and BigQuery data

## When to avoid
- you need real-time GitHub statistics rather than periodically batch-computed rankings
- you need rankings for users inactive since 2011, which the GitHub Archive dataset cannot cover
- you want a maintained product - the project has seen little activity since its 2023 release
