## What it is
Legend is an end-to-end data platform from FINOS (originated at Goldman Sachs) covering the full data lifecycle: modeling, curation, querying, governance, and sharing. It includes Legend Studio (a visual data modeling editor), Legend Query (drag-and-drop self-service querying), an execution engine, and code translation to JSON Schema, Protobuf, and AVRO.

## Use cases
- build governed data models with a visual editor
- let business users query data without SQL
- generate APIs from data models
- translate data models to JSON Schema, Protobuf, or Avro
- track data lineage and provenance
- break down data silos between business and engineering teams

## When to choose
- you need a governed, self-service data platform with shared business vocabularies
- you want to bridge data modeling between business and engineering teams
- you need model-to-schema interoperability across systems
- you want lineage and entitlement-aware data access built in

## When to avoid
- you need a lightweight single-purpose ETL or query tool
- your team cannot operate a multi-component platform (Studio, Engine, SDLC, Depot)
- you only need ad-hoc analytics without formal data modeling
