## What it is
FastFlix is a free, open-source graphical interface for encoding videos with H.264, HEVC, and AV1 encoders, built on top of FFmpeg. It supports both software encoders (x265, x264, rav1e, AOM/SVT AV1, VP9, VVC) and hardware encoders (Nvidia NVEnc, Intel QSV, AMD VCE, VAAPI, Apple VideoToolbox), including HDR10 and HDR10+ metadata handling.

## Use cases
- convert videos to HEVC with HDR10 metadata preserved
- encode AV1 videos with a GUI instead of command line
- compress large video files using hardware GPU encoding
- add HDR10+ dynamic metadata to HEVC encodes
- extract and reattach cover art and subtitles when encoding MP4 or MKV
- batch re-encode a movie library to save disk space
- encode video for Apple devices using VideoToolbox on macOS

## When to choose
- you want a friendly GUI over FFmpeg for video encoding
- you need HDR10/HDR10+ support with x265 or AV1 encoders
- you want to leverage GPU hardware encoders from Nvidia, Intel, or AMD
- you need cross-platform encoding on Windows, macOS, or Linux

## When to avoid
- you need fully automated, scriptable headless transcoding pipelines (use FFmpeg directly)
- you require a video editor with cutting, trimming, or effects
- your FFmpeg build lacks the encoders you need and you cannot upgrade it
