## What it is
CoreELEC is a lightweight 'Just enough OS' Linux distribution built to run Kodi media center software on low-cost Amlogic-based hardware. It is a community-maintained fork of LibreELEC with extensive hardware video/audio decoding and passthrough support.

## Use cases
- turn an Amlogic TV box into a Kodi media center
- boot a minimal Linux OS for home theater playback
- play 4K HDR and Dolby Vision content on cheap hardware
- bitstream Dolby Atmos and DTS-X audio to an AVR
- replace Android on an S905/S905X4 box with a dedicated media OS

## When to choose
- you have an Amlogic SoC device (S905X2 through S905X5, etc.) and want a dedicated Kodi appliance
- you need hardware decoding for H.264/H.265/AV1/VP9 and lossless audio passthrough
- you want a minimal, boot-from-SD/USB OS with no general-purpose desktop overhead

## When to avoid
- your hardware is Raspberry Pi or generic x86 (use LibreELEC or OSMC instead)
- you need a general-purpose Linux desktop or package ecosystem
- your device uses an Amlogic GXL/S905X or older SoC on the Kodi 22 branch
