## What it is
Codewhale is an open-source, terminal-native coding agent written in Rust that reads your repository, edits files, runs commands, and works toward goals under configurable approval modes. It supports any hosted or local model (Ollama, vLLM, SGLang, 45+ providers), multi-agent fleets, MCP servers, and hooks, with a TUI and headless exec mode.

## Use cases
- fix failing tests from the terminal with an AI agent
- run a coding agent with local models via Ollama
- orchestrate multiple AI agents on coding tasks
- automate code edits with approval gates and undo
- connect MCP servers to a terminal coding assistant
- use different LLM models for different agent roles
- run headless coding agent tasks in CI or scripts

## When to choose
- you want a terminal-native coding agent that works with local or self-hosted models
- you need fine-grained permission modes, undo, and workspace snapshots
- you want multi-agent orchestration (Fleet/Workflow) with MCP and hooks extensibility
- you prefer open-source, local-first tooling with no vendor lock-in

## When to avoid
- you want a GUI or IDE-integrated assistant rather than a terminal TUI
- you need a fully managed cloud coding service with no local setup
- you require long-term stability guarantees — the project is pre-1.0 and evolving quickly
