## What it is
Arc is a customized Redpill boot loader that lets Synology DSM 7.x (Xpenology) run on arbitrary consumer hardware. It detects CPU, network, and storage controllers, then semi-automatically builds and configures a matching loader with addons, modules, and a web UI.

## Use cases
- run Synology DSM 7.x on non-Synology hardware
- build a home NAS with Xpenology
- boot DSM on custom CPUs, NICs, and SATA/NVMe controllers
- semi-automated guided DSM installation
- manage DSM bootloader addons and kernel modules
- configure SN/MAC and port maps for a DSM loader

## When to choose
- you want DSM 7.x features on your own hardware without buying a Synology box
- you need broad hardware support with guided, semi-automated loader setup
- you want a maintained loader with web UI, addons, backup/restore, and online updates

## When to avoid
- you need a legally licensed NAS OS for commercial use (commercial use is forbidden)
- you cannot tolerate risk of data loss from bootloader modifications
- you want a fully supported, vendor-backed NAS solution
- you need DSM 6.x or vDSM
