## What it is
Amundsen is an open-source data discovery and metadata engine that indexes data resources such as tables, dashboards, and streams, and powers usage-based search across them. It consists of a React/Flask frontend, a search service backed by Elasticsearch, a metadata service backed by Neo4j or Apache Atlas, and a databuilder ingestion library.

## Use cases
- find the right table for analysis across a large data warehouse
- search company datasets by usage popularity
- build an internal data catalog for analysts and engineers
- discover who owns a dataset and how it is used
- index dashboards and streams alongside tables
- browse table schema and lineage metadata

## When to choose
- your organization needs a self-hosted, Google-like search over data assets
- you want a mature, foundation-hosted data catalog with microservice architecture
- you need usage-based ranking of datasets to aid discovery

## When to avoid
- you only need lightweight documentation of a handful of datasets
- you cannot operate Elasticsearch plus Neo4j/Atlas infrastructure
- you want a fully managed SaaS catalog without self-hosting
